CAT MAINTENANCE

We can divide cats into three age groups:
Kitten, Mature cat, Senior cat (older than 10 years)

• Periodical veterinary exams should be more
  frequent with kittens and senior cats.
• We must prevent fleas throughout the year.
• It is advisable to prevent internal parasites at least three times a year.
• Outdoor cats should be regularly checked for mites.
• Vaccination (once a year):
  - Panleukopenia Virus
  - Herpes Virus
  - Calicivirus
  - Rabies (cats travelling abroad or living outdoors)
  - Feline Leukemia (outdoor cats)
• Spaying / Neutering
  For females, spaying eliminates or greatly minimizes problems with:
  - unwanted pregnancy, which helps prevent pet overpopulation;
  - attraction of male cats during "heat" cycles;
  - breast cancer.
  For males, neutering eliminates or greatly minimizes problems with:
  - aggression and dominance;
  - roaming, which helps prevent pet overpopulation;
  - territorial marking with urine.
